Statement From Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr., the Board of Regents, and Commissioner Betty A. Rosa Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. inspired millions to believe in the power of their voices and deliberate actions, sparking a global movement for civil rights and social justice. His enduring impact resonates today, reminding us of the profound change one individual, armed with courage and conviction, can achieve for the betterment of society. Whether it was leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, or the Selma to Montgomery March, Dr. King's behavior was a unique display of passion, inspiration, bravery, and humility. His belief in humanity's capacity for progress, his call for racial equality, and his message of non-violent resistance continue to inspire generations. Using Dr. King's legacy as a beacon of inspiration, the State Education Department is committed to igniting and inspiring teaching and learning that builds a culture and society of equal opportunity for all—ensuring that our next generation of leaders are fully prepared for civic duty and deeply committed to social justice. Together with our partners in education, we will work to continue his vision with unwavering determination.
