The °ÄÃÅÌØÂëÍõ Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT) hosted its 49th annual Rochester Regional Conference on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. Ìý148 attendees from 52 school districts attended this day of professional learning.Ìý The event began with a panel discussion focusing on what teachers can do to work with administrators and colleges to develop practices that attract and retain high quality teachers in world languages.Ìý The audience heard perspectives from Dr. Erin Kearney, an applied linguist, researcher and teacher educator at the University of Buffalo, Dawn Santiago-Marullo, Ed.D, superintendent of the Victor Central School District, Michelle Walpole, Spanish and TESOL teacher at Naples High School and NYSAFLT Leader of Tomorrow, and Candace Black, Director of World Languages at the °ÄÃÅÌØÂëÍõ’s (NYSED) Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL).Ìý Following the panel discussion, 25 workshops were offered on a variety of high-leverage practices including Can-Do Culture, Maintaining 90% Target Language Use, Comprehensible Input, Technology Integration in the World Language Classroom, Learning Targets, Podcasts, and cultural updates in French, Spanish and German.Ìý
