World Languages in the Elementary Schools and the Revised Standards

The Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) of the °ÄÃÅÌØÂëÍõ (NYSED) presents this next webinar in its 2023 Professional Learning Series:ÌýÌýWorld Languages in the Elementary School and the Revised Standards.Ìý This webinar is offered free of charge for world language educators and administrators working and studying in °ÄÃÅÌØÂëÍõ educational institutions.

Webinar description: ÌýHow can early language teachers create proficiency-based lessons that align to the revised standards? In this session, participants will discover how FLES teachers can plan engaging and developmentally-appropriate lessons that promote proficiency development for students in grades K-6.ÌýParticipants should include administrators and teachers of World Language or Dual Language programs at the elementary school level, or administrators and teachers interested in establishing such programs.

To receive a certificate of completion (including a CTLE certificate), NYS educators must view the recording of the webinar (see link above) in its entirety and then answer at least seven out of ten questions correctly on the post assessment.Ìý If the minimum required score (7 out of 10) is achieved, the educator will receive a certificate via emailÌýwithin an hour.Ìý For the convenience of our World Language educators, there are multiple versions of the post assessment available, should the required score not be achieved on the first attempt.Ìý Educators may take each version of the post assessmentÌýonce.

Important notes:

  1. Educators may take each version of the post assessmentÌýonce.ÌýÌýCredit will not be given for taking a single version of the post assessment more than once.Ìý
  2. Credit will not be given forÌýmore than one passing scoreÌýon any of the post assessments for a webinar (listed below)Ìýin a single academic year.ÌýÌý
  3. Educators may receive credit for viewing the webinar recording and passing a post assessment once in each academic year and are encouraged to take a different version of the post assessment on a yearly basis to review and test their knowledge of the webinar's content.Ìý
  4. It is the responsibility of the individual educator to keep track of the information on the professional learning they complete each year, including the number of CTLE hours.

Webinar presenter:Ìý Marissa Coulehan teaches Spanish to second through fifth grades at Springhurst ES in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She also teaches the NYS FLES certification course at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. Marissa serves as the 2023 NYSAFLT President. She has served as past chair of the ACTFL Language Learning for Children special interest group, NNELL NY state representative, NNELL northeast representative, and NNELL executive secretary. She has a B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature and Secondary Education from the University of Maryland, along with a Master of Arts in Teaching in Early Childhood and Childhood Education from Manhattanville College.
